Celebrating the diverse talents and achievements of those within the Vic Park Community is at the heart of this thing we call #vicparklife.
Who would have thought that hidden amongst school pick ups and drop offs, play dates and running a monster renovation, we’d find our very own Vic Park author?
We know that Crow Books will be happy to stock this book and we hope you pick up a copy when it hits the shelves soon!
Congratulations Jacqueline Perry-Strickland.
‘The Magpie’s Nest has been seven years of toil – five to write it in between having two children and extending our Vic Park weatherboard house, and two to redraft and polish. The refinements are ceaseless with always a different word to try, a different way to phrase, a different mannerism to include. But now the time is drawing near to let you all enter the world of this Perth costume hire shop so you can shimmy the tassels and swish the feather boas, plonk on the pith helmets and dance around the Mexican hats … and maybe draw down your felt cloche hats Miss Marple-style to solve the mystery of the emerald gown.
I don’t know where the story came from. It certainly wasn’t storyboarded. Just each time I sat at the laptop there would be developments, scenarios, whisperings being transmitted from my fingertips to the page before my eyes. ‘Who are you and where did you come from?’ I would ask. ‘And where am I going?’ the character would answer. So off we would go on an unenvisaged tangent, one to finally weave back into the story as a whole.
So, come November, please read my book! It’s a bit of whimsy, a flight of fancy, and if you pay attention the clues are all there to get to the bottom of it all. But never fear as the sequel (currently in the pipeline), The Cat’s Miaow, will reveal all.’
